4 FALL FITNESS BOOSTERS

PRINTER FREINDLY VERSION |

The air is turning colder… and soon the leaves will begin to turn red, yellow and orange, then fall lazily to the ground. It’s a good reminder of the autumn changes that are coming.

It’s also a great time to take a fresh look at your fitness program.

Whether you’re in an exercise rut, suffering a lack of motivation or simply aren’t getting the weight loss results you desire, today’s fall fitness tips may be just what you need to enhance your workouts – and to send your weight falling with the leaves!

1. Think hands free. It’s a common practice is to talk on your cell phone or even read a magazine or book while on the treadmill or other piece of exercise equipment. Sure, it’s nice to have ways to pass the time during exercise, but these habits have been shown to impede the intensity of your workouts. Your calories burned are a function of the duration and the intensity of your workout. If your intensity is less, then you’ll need to up the length of your workouts to compensate. Why not commit to a hands-free workout where you can pump those arms and enjoy a more intense workout!

(Tip continues below)

2. Change the scenery. Are you someone who typically works out indoors or always takes the same jogging path? Fall in for change… and get a new appreciation for Mother Nature’s tapestry of scenery. You don’t need a machine for outdoor jogging or power-walking. All you really need is a good pair of gym shoes and the right mindset. If you’re lucky enough to live near hiking trails, a sandy beach or the zoo, take a new route and take in the view. New terrain is a great way to challenge your muscles and your mind. Winter’s coming. Enjoy the fresh air and neighborhood sights and sounds while you can!

3. Try new tools. Exercise gadgets don’t have to cost a lot of money to add value to your workout. But they can add a sense of newness and fun. Tools to consider: a pedometer, exercise bands, a large fit ball, home exercise videos or DVD’s, or even one of the new BPA-free water bottles. Many plastic water bottles are considered unsafe because they leach chemicals. By updating your water bottle, you’ll be reminding yourself that your health is worth the investment.

4. Buddy up. Now that the kids are back at school, you may find yourself wanting to create new routines that fit within your home and work schedules. This may be the perfect time to make regular exercise dates with a friend, neighbor, family member or work colleague. Whether it’s an early morning walking date, a lunchtime power walk, an evening yoga class or even a weekend bike ride, buddying up with others will give you the accountability you need to follow through and stick with it.

I hope these four tips will help you fight fitness boredom and re-energize your Fall Fitness Program.
